Sıra dışı aileleri filmlerine konu eden Japon usta Kore-eda, bu kez bir kasaba okulunda çıkan olayları, kendi deyimiyle "devasa bir uçurum yaratarak toplumu bölen küçük kıvılcımları" anlatıyor. Oğlu Minato'nun davranışlarından şüphelenen annesi, bu değişimden çocuğun öğretmeninin sorumlu olduğunu öğrenir ve hemen okul yönetiminden hesap sorar. Anne, çocuk ve öğretmenin gözünden hikâyeyi ayrı ayrı izlediğimiz filmin Cannes'da ödül kazanan senaryosunu Yuji Sakamoto yazdı. Kore-eda, filmdeki uçurum "dünya çapında insanlar, ülkeler ve etnik gruplar arasındaki ayrımı yansıtıyor" diyor.
